Before I met my husband, I was was under the impression that the military paid for everything.If you are a spouse or significant other of a service member (or perhaps, youve served or are serving), you know that this is simply not true.In fact, it is a common misconception that military personnel have all their expenses covered.

Service members may receive an allowance to cover the cost of their uniforms.The allowances are broken down into categories and separated by branch and gender. You can visit Defense Finance Accounting Service (DFAS) for more in-depth information.

Standard Initial Clothing Allowances

Enlisted service members receive a uniform in basic training. They may receive an allowance for additional items such as PT gear. Officers receive a cash clothing allowance upon entry into active duty.

Service members receive a Basic Clothing Allowance after 6 months of active duty and every year for the next two years.

Standard Clothing Replacement Allowances

Service members receive a Standard Clothing Allowance after 3 years of active duty and is paid at the end of their anniversary month.

Navy

Air Force

Male: $559.55

Female: $562.58

Marine Corps

Male: $692.04

Female: $689.28

Special Clothing Replacement Allowances (Navy)

This Special Clothing Allowance is only applicable to Navy E-7 through E-9 and is paid every year.

Navy

Male: $669.60

Female: $586.80

Special Initial Clothing Allowances (Navy)

(1) Paid to E-6 or below and assigned to the US Navy Band, Washington, DC or the US Naval Academy Band, or selected for appointment as a Limited Duty Officer. This allowance is also paid to a Chief Petty Officer E-7 through E-9.

(2) Paid to service members enrolled in Officer Candidate School, the Enlisted Commissioning Program, or the Seaman to Admiral Program.

Special Initial Clothing Allowances (Air Force)

(1) Paid to a direct civilian accession student to the Air Force Officer Training School (AFOTS).

(3) Paid to service members assigned to the US Air Force Academy Preparatory School.

Supplemental Clothing Allowances

A Supplemental Clothing Allowance may be available to service members on special assignment.
